Brunch at Morning Glory, San Diego

What happens when you blend a near perfect aesthetic with a funky, international brunch menu and tuck it away in Little Italy? You get Morning Glory!

This brunch destination opened it’s doors in 2019 with a build helmed by Basile Studio and a reported price tag of 4 million. Apparently that paid off because it now proudly brags a Michelin Bib Gourmand award and boasts notoriously long lines.

My husband and I have been lucky enough to visit a couple times so let’s get down to business, shall we?

There’s really only one dish I’d recommend to start and we ordered it both times: soufflé pancakes. This Japanese dish is almost incomprehensibly light; like eating air if air tasted delicious. Order them for the table and thank me later.

I suggest one order per two people. Creatures of habit, I also ordered a matcha latte (served in vintage inspired stemware) and my husband his usual black coffee.

On our first visit, we continued with the theme of ordering plates to share and picked out the khachapuri and crispy hash potatoes. When shared, this was definitely a lighter order which suited our plans that day.

If you’re unfamiliar with khachapuri, considered Georgia’s national dish, it is a distant cousin of the calzone but fashioned into a boat shape. Naturally, this version was topped with an egg as it was a breakfast interpretation.

Another round of applause for this interior:

For our next visit, we repeated the coffee, matcha, and soufflé pancakes then explored the rest of the menu.

He selected steak and eggs which was sumptuously served with a cut of wagyu. Rounded out with crispy hash potatoes and toast the dish is accompanied by both bordelaise and béarnaise sauces.

I selected the Turkish eggs which are poached eggs swimming in yogurt. Topped with cherry tomatoes, mint, olive oil, and chili garlic it packs a serious punch. Personally, I tended to avoid the mint as it could be overpowering but chili and yogurt paired with the richness of egg yolk was a flavor combination I didn’t know I was missing out on!

My only complaint was that I wish it came with more bread. What else is new? There can always be more bread!

For those interested, the Saint Laurent bag is the Kate Tassel Wallet on Chain. This variation is sold out but the classic version is available via Neiman Marcus along with the embossed version in a different size. The Fendi bag is from their Spring 2018 collection but it pops up every once in a while on Fashionphile or The RealReal.

I’m already looking forward to returning so we can sample more dishes. Next time you visit San Diego be sure to incorporate this in the itinerary.
